Bassem S. Zaki, Springfield, IL, passed away August 2, 2026, at his home.
He was born November 25, 1941, in Egypt. He married Karen Allison Meyer in 1993. She preceded him in death.
Bassem is survived by a grandson, Drake Meyer, and a daughter-in-law, Nicole Meyer.
Preceding him in death were his family in Springfield: his wife; two stepsons, Robert Meyer and Matthew Meyer; his parents in Egypt.
Bassem was a man of many talents, having been involved in teaching young children and in archeological research in Egypt; an interpreter of Arabic/English writings; a college instructor; and many other equally interesting things. His favorite job was being a grandfather to Drake. He continued his love for education by taking Drake as a young boy to museums, parks, local events, and buying him many, many books as Christmas and birthday gifts.
Cremation rites have been accorded. Burial will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of choice.
Staab Funeral Home in Springfield assisted the family with arrangements.
