Charles “Bud” Evers Nelson 70, of Springfield, died at 9:44 am, Saturday, March 28, 2026, at his home. He was born November 21, 1955, in Rock Falls, IL, to Ernest Evers and Martha (Wilson) Nelson. He married Gloria J. Nelson on May 23, 1975.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Gloria Nelson of Springfield; one son, Brian Michael Nelson, of Springfield; two grandchildren, Madelynn Morenz and Samantha Morenz; five sisters, Elizabeth (Steve) Kroneberger of Chicago; Mary Lynn (Rick) Stella, Karen Jungenburg, Maria (Andy) Zeigler and Lisa (Todd) Cambensy all of Tuscan, AZ; his beloved cat, Boots and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Patrick Nelson.
Charles was a member of St. Aloysius Church and was a US Air Force Veteran.
He was an avid NASCAR fan and enjoyed car racing of all kinds and loved classic cars and attending car shows. His passion was cooking on the grill and sharing with the neighborhood. He liked cooking shows and was anxious to try out their recipes. Football was his favorite sport, and he never gave up on the Chicago Bears. He retired from the State of Illinois where he worked in the Department of Human Services for more than 20 years.
Visitation: 9:30 -11:30 am, Monday, April 6, 2026, at Staab Funeral Home – Springfield.
Funeral Service: 11:30 am, Monday, April 6 2026, at Staab Funeral Home – Springfield with Rev. George Nellikunnel officiating. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery, where military honors will be conducted.
