David Lawson Laub, 57, of Springfield, fought renal cell carcinoma since 2004 and passed away on November 24, 2025, surrounded by his loved ones. He was born on May 29, 1968, the son of Lawson and MaryAnn (Murphy) Laub. David married the love of his life, Jill Groth, on July 23, 1994.
David is preceded in death by his mother, MaryAnn.
Survivors include his wife, Jill Laub; two sons, Logan Laub of Greeley, CO, Dylan Laub of Springfield; and two that made their family complete, Kevin and Karilyn Laub of Springfield; four siblings, Laura (Chuck) Trader, Debbie Jones, and Steve Laub, all of Springfield, and Amy (Sami) Agirbas of New Berlin; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
David attended Illinois College, where he was in the fraternity, Sigma Pi. While at Illinois College, he studied and received his bachelor’s degree in business administration. He furthered his education receiving his master’s degree in elementary education from Benedictine University.
Before his career in education, David worked in the freight business for 18 years.
David was passionate about educating new generations. He was a beloved language arts teacher at Chatham Middle School. He dedicated 17 years to teaching his students and treasured friendships with his colleagues.
David loved cheering on the Tennessee Volunteers, Blackhawks, and Buffalo Bills. In his free time, he coached his son’s soccer teams and enjoyed finding Goodwill treasures for his outside wall, which included dragonflies, bigfoot and lobster memorabilia. David was an avid reader, and he enjoyed listening to bluegrass music.
David cherished time with his friends, often embarking on hunting trips in Rushville with the “beer” camp crew. He enjoyed camping adventures at Land Between the Lakes “LBL” (Tennessee side) with family and friends. Above all, David deeply loved his wife, his children, and his extended family in Chattanooga, TN, especially his Uncle Steve.
His absence will be profoundly felt by all who knew and loved him.
Visitation: 3:30 – 6:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 2, 2025, at Staab Funeral Home – Springfield.
Memorial Mass: 12:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 3, 2025, at St. Jude Catholic Church in Rochester, with Fr. Peter Chineke officiating. A burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Chatham Middle School for the Titan Fuel Program.
