Donna Jane Call, 74, of Springfield, IL, passed away on April 17, 2026, in the city where she was born on October 20, 1951.
Donna was born in Springfield to William Edgar Call and Elsie June Wertz Call and was raised with the love and guidance of her family and the strong values that shaped her life. She attended West Side Elementary School and Jefferson Jr. High before graduating from Southeast High School in 1969. From an early age, Donna carried herself with kindness, warmth, and a spirited personality that would remain with her throughout her life.
After high school, Donna began working at Myers Brothers Department Store before finding a long and meaningful career with Illinois Bell Telephone Co., where she served for 30 years. Her dedication, reliability, and friendly nature made her a valued coworker and a trusted friend to many. Following her retirement, she continued to share her time and talents at the Lincoln Library, where she worked part-time as the chief book shelver from 2005 until the present. There, she made many friends and remained a familiar and cheerful presence to all who knew her.
Donna was a loving, friendly, and spirited woman who enjoyed life’s simple pleasures and many adventures. She loved traveling and had a special appreciation for photography, gardening, plays, and old movies and television shows. She also enjoyed doing puzzles, reading, and listening to music, especially the Beatles and Queen. One of the great highlights of her life was seeing her favorite Beatle, Ringo Starr, in concert. Donna was also a devoted sports fan who cheered faithfully for the St. Louis Cardinals, Chicago Cubs, and Philadelphia Phillies. After the COVID pandemic, she became a big fan of the Green Bay Packers, as well as the St. Louis Blues, and she loved watching college basketball.
Donna was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, where her faith was an important part of her life. She will be remembered for her gentle heart, her loyal friendships, and the joy she brought to those around her. Her best friend of 60 years, Karen Graff of Springfield, IL, survives her, along with her cousins, Charles B. Call, Jr., Paula Call, Diana Gillespie, William “Bill” Call, Craig Call, and Brian Call. She was preceded in death by her parents, William Edgar Call and Elsie June Wertz Call, as well as her grandparents, Frank and Elsie Wertz and Edgar and Jane Call.
Donna’s life was one of devotion, kindness, and quiet strength. She touched the lives of many through her work, her friendships, and her enduring love of family, music, books, and the world around her. Her memory will be cherished by all who knew and loved her.
Visitation: 9:30 – 11:00 am, Tuesday, April 28, 2026 at Staab Funeral Home – Springfield.
Funeral Service: 11:00 am, Tuesday, April 28, 2026 at Staab Funeral Home – Springfield, with Rev. Timothy Good officiating. A private family burial will take place at Oak Ridge Cemetery.
Memorial contributions in memory of Donna may be made to Lincoln Library Foundation, Animal Protective League, or to the Wounded Warrior Project.
