Ernest Eugene “Gene” Heaton, 91, of Springfield, IL, passed away on Friday, December 26, 2025, at IL Veterans Home in Quincy, IL. He was born on August 11, 1934, in Industry, IL to Ernest E. and Inez (Kelly) Heaton and they preceded him in death.

 He was also preceded in death by his infant son, Ernest E. Heaton; stillborn sister, Betty; and sister, Elaine (Bob) Heffner.

 Gene is survived by four children, Vicki (Burr, dec.) Bault of Springfield, Rhonda Heaton of Independence, OR, Christopher (Susan) Heaton of Chatham, and Erin Ludwig of Springfield, IL; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; two brothers, Wayne (Pat) Heaton of Canyon City, CO, and Eldon (Sherill) Heaton of Springfield and several nieces and nephews.

 Gene graduated from Industry High School in Industry, IL and then proudly enlisted with the United States Navy. While in the Navy he served in the 9th Naval District on the USS Midway from 1952-1955. He received multiple medals for his service, they were the Good Conduct, China Service, and National Defense Medals. After the Navy, he then worked as an engineer for AT&T, formerly IL Bell for many years before retirement. He was an active member of the VFW Lafore Post 755 in Springfield, IL.

 Family Hosted Graveside Service: 1:00 pm, Wednesday, January 7, 2026, at Camp Butler National Cemetery, where military honors will be conducted.

 Memorial contributions may be made to Land of Lincoln Honor Flight or to the Animal Protective League.
