Floyd Marshall Coleman, 90, of Springfield, IL, passed away on Sunday, June 22, 2025. Floyd was born on February 17, 1935, in Booneville, MO to Henry R. and Odessa (Dowe) Coleman. He married the love of his life, Yvonne L. Mason, on October 4, 1961, and she survives.
He is also survived by his daughter, Stephanie Y. Coleman of Arizona; sons, Floyd W. (Dana) Coleman of Springfield and Dwayne D. Coleman of Springfield; grandsons, Nicholas M. Warfield - Coleman and Floyd M. Coleman; great-grandchildren, Kamaree Coleman, Michael Coleman, Milyn Coleman, Nicholas Warfield, Anaja Smith, Talaya Warfield, Elijah Johnson, Kamryn Warfield, and Jaydah Atkins; his godchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Floyd is preceded in death by his parents; and sisters, Norlene Davis, Pauline Perry, Betty Johnson, and Emma Lewis.
Floyd was a man of great faith and attended Calvary Missionary Baptist Church. His favorite scripture was the 23rd Psalm. He also participated and was a member of the Masonic Lodge #49 in Boonville, MO and the Urban League Retired Teachers Association, state and local chapters. He was also the chairman of Deacon board and finance as well as taught Sunday School for his church. He also achieved a blackbelt in taekwondo, for which he served as a referee and used that skill to help teach children learning taekwondo.
He served our country in the United States Army during peace time. Floyd graduated with a master’s degree in education and began his career as a teacher. He was a dedicated teacher for District 186 for over 30 years and retired in 1994. His passion for teaching was seen as he served as a Sunday school teacher and was involved with the education program at church.
Visitation: 10:30 am – 12:00 pm, Monday, July 7, 2025 at Calvary Missionary Baptist Church - 2208 E. Kansas St., Springfield, IL.
Funeral Service: 12:00 pm, Monday, July 7, 2025 at Calvary Missionary Baptist Church with Pastor Silas Johnson officiating. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery with military honors being conducted.
Memorial contributions may be made to District 186 or to Calvary Missionary Baptist Church Youth Department.
