Frank J. Copi, 97, of Springfield, IL, passed away on Wednesday, May 6, 2026. He was born on April 9, 1929, in Springfield, the son of Frank and Catherine (Klasing) Copi. He married Phyllis Good on August 12, 1950, and they shared 69 years of marriage before her passing in 2019.

He is survived by his two children, Dave Copi and Carole Copi; his grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and one niece and nephew. He was preceded in death by his wife Phyllis; his parents; and his sister, Norma Hoehn.

Frank earned his master’s degree from Illinois State University and began his career in education in 1957. After several years as a teacher, he served as a school principal for 32 years. Following his retirement, he founded Power Presentations, where he spent many years as a motivational speaker.

Frank was deeply committed to physical fitness and remained active throughout his life. He participated in the YMCA and FitClub, where he was featured on several FitClub billboards. In 1969, he served as the “Big Boss” for the YMCA membership drive and earned the nickname “Coyote,” a name that stayed with him for the rest of his life. To celebrate his 72nd birthday on April 9, 2001, Frank bicycled 72 miles, spent 72 minutes on a treadmill, completed 72 180-degree lifts on the high bar, and lifted 70-pound dumbbells 72 times.

A founding member of the Springfield Road Runners, Frank was inducted into the organization’s Hall of Fame in 2016. Having grown up across from Bunn Park Golf Course, he developed a lifelong love of golf at an early age. Even into his 90’s he remained a dedicated “gym rat”, lifting weights and keeping pace with people decades younger. He also enjoyed cycling and completed RAGBRAI as well as numerous Hilly Hundred rides.

Frank was grateful to live independently in his home until the final two weeks of his life. He will be remembered as a friend to all, as well as a mentor, coach, teacher, and gardener. His remarkable work ethic inspired those around him, and he often taught his children that “there is never a crowd at the end of the extra mile.”

 Hang tough, Coyote!
