George B. Hermes 81, of Springfield, passed away at 11:18 am, Monday, January 12, 2026, at The Arc of Sangamon Valley in Springfield. He was born June 1, 1944, in Alexander, IL, to Carl J. and Josephine (Bellm) Hermes. He married Nancy J. Parlier on April 11, 1970, and she survives.
Also surviving are two daughters, Sherry (Frank) Wascher of Joliet and Cathy (Terry) Voelkers of Bettendorf, IA; one son, Michael Hermes of New Berlin; six grandchildren, Justin Hermes, Sophia Hermes, Paytin Hermes, Blake Hermes, Lauren Clotfelter and Evan Clotfelter; two sisters, Mary Jo Morlee of and Anna Marie Rine, both of Springfield; one brother, Jacob (Margie) Hermes of Springfield; sister-in-law, Romie Hermes of Springfield and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Barbara Fank and Catherine Canfield and one brother, Patrick Hermes.
George was a 1963 graduate of New Berlin High School and a member of St. Agnes Church. He was a United States Veteran of the Illinois Army National Guard.
He farmed and raised cattle all his life and was the co-owner of Hermes Brothers Farms, Inc. George enjoyed watching John Wayne movies, traveling and family vacations. His favorite Sunday activity was taking a drive and looking at his fields and Livestock.
Visitation: 3-6 pm, Sunday, January 18, 2026, at Staab Funeral Home – Springfield. A vigil prayer service will be held at 3 pm.
Funeral Mass: 10 am, Monday, January 19, 2026, at St. Agnes Church with Reverend Dan Bergbower officiating. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in New Berlin.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Agnes Church, New Berlin Fire Department, or Pleasant Plains Fire Protection District.
