On February 1, 1958, the world was blessed with a great man by the name of Glenn Richard Weronko. Although he breathed his last breath on July 9, 2026, we have come together on this beautiful day to celebrate the wonderful life he lived.
Growing up in California, Glenn became an Eagle Scout, and soon after graduated from Marina High School in 1976. With the drive to continue his education, he went to Golden West College. While there, he met Mary Desmond, who became his wife in December of 1980. In 1981, Glenn graduated from Golden West before going into the US Air Force from 1983 – 1987, where he had the opportunity to further continue his education at Delaware State University. Glenn graduated from Delaware State with a bachelor’s in history in 1986, then soon after, graduated from Wilmington University in 1987 with a Master of Science in Human Resources. In 2005, he completed his formal education from University of Illinois – Springfield with a Master of Arts in History. He retired from being a disability claims adjudicator from the state of Illinois in 2018, which allowed him to pursue what he really enjoyed.
At home, Glenn would pride himself on fixing up old Volkswagen bugs and buses with his treasured Snap-On tools. In his free time, he enjoyed reading books that contained bits of the past, inspired by his love of history. This later led to him volunteering at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum in his retirement.
Outside of education, Glenn loved to explore the world. Throughout his life, he visited all fifty states in the U.S., six continents, and thirty-five countries. Of the places he never thought he would go to, he recalled his trip to the Great Pyramids of Giza as being on the top of the list. He would always recollect his adventures in Venice as being a favorite. On his trips to visit family, he would play strategic games of chess with his youngest granddaughter, as well as explore in the local swap meets. He had just returned from a Mediterranean cruise in the last month, accomplishing his drive to travel his whole life.
Glenn is survived by his wife, Mary; one son, Sean (Becca) Weronko of Orange County, CA; one daughter, Lauren Weronko of Springfield; two granddaughters, Ella and Amelia Weronko; and two sisters, Sandy (Bryce) Holonen of Eugene, OR, and Linda (Greg) Retting of Colorado Springs, CO. He was preceded in death by his parents, Chester and Dorothy (Glenn) Weronko.
Glenn was a life-long learner who always longed to experience new places, expressing the power of discovering oneself as one explores the world.
Graveside Service: 10:00 AM, Thursday, July 16, 2026, Camp Butler National Cemetery with Rev. Richard Young officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Interveterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County and the United States Air Force.
Memorial Contributions: Presbyterian Church of Christ in Mt. Sterling, IL or the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield.
