Hobart “Murf” LeRoy Murphy 73, of Chatham, formerly of Marshfield, MO, died at 1:44 am, Wednesday, April 30, 2025, at his home. He was born May 3, 1951, in McMinnville, TN, to Robert J. and Norma Jean Milligan Murphy. He married Mary L. Peyton on December 18, 1971, and she survives.

Also surviving are three sons, James (Sandra) Murphy of El Portillo, Honduras, Joseph (Michelle) Murphy of Sahuarita AZ and Justin (Rachel) Murphy of Mishawaka, IN; twelve grandchildren, Kayla (Shawn) Anders, Dalton (Katie) Murphy Alannah Murphy, Dillon Murphy, Hannah Murphy, Reagan Murphy, Jake Murphy, Tyler Murphy, Hunter Murphy, Bryan Murphy, Avery (Samuel) Ingram and Ryon Hortberg; four great grandchildren; Selena, Caitlin and Reilly Anders, and Henry Murphy; two sisters, Mary (Steve) Grospitch of Louisburg, KS and Betty (Steve) Bayliff of Springfield, MO; one brother, Jack Murphy of Conway, MO and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Norma Downing, granddaughter, Caitlin Mae Murphy; sister, Rona Vestal; three brothers, Bobby, David and Paul Murphy, and step-brother, Larry Downing.

Murf retired from UPS and the State of Illinois.

He was a US Marine Corps veteran.

He was a member of Subic Bay Marines and had served as trustee in the Village of Dawson. He coached Little League, was a member of the Route 66 Cruisers and rode with the Patriot Guard. He enjoyed helping and pranking his neighbors. He was affectionately known as the “popsicle man”.

He was a family man who was full of life and love and will deeply missed by many.

The family will host a visitation from 10:00 – 12:00 with a Celebration of life at 12:00 on Wednesday May 7th at Koke Mill Christian Church. A committal will be at Camp Butler National Cemetery at 2:00pm.
