Howard Edward “Slick” Hinds, 87, of Rochester, IL, passed away on October 20, 2025. Edward was born on August 21, 1938 in Ashland, IL, to Frank Allen and Permelia (Ringler) Hinds. Howard married Jeanne M. Vosylius on May 20, 1961, and she preceded him in death on August 14, 2003. He then met and married Vicki Hayes Webber on November 20, 2004, and she affectionately called him “Bubba”.

He is survived by his wife, Vicki; daughter, Jeanie (Paul) Edwards of Springfield; son, Mark Hinds of Springfield; step-son, Jason Webber of Rochester; grandchildren, Kayla (Chris) Brinkmeyer, Deanna (Brandon) Scherrer, Kyle Edwards, Nicholas Hinds, and Erica Segar; several great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Howard is preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Jeanne M. Vosylius; daughter, Laurie Segar; grandson, Little Ed; and nine beloved siblings.

Howard attended Lanphier High School, then enlisted in the United States Navy, serving from 1959 – 1962. He proudly served on the USS SHANGRI-LA CVA-38. After his service, he worked at Fiat-Allis, IL National Guard, and then the Illinois Department of Transportation, where he eventually retired.

Howard was also an avid traveler. He enjoyed many different trips, whether that was visiting the liveliness in Las Vegas or all the way to the busyness of New York. He also enjoyed traveling on cruises, most favorably, Alaska and Caribbean cruises.

Howard was a diehard fan for the Cubs, Bears, and the Fighting Illini. In his free time, Howard enjoyed reading various books, his favorite genre being anything Western. Howard also enjoyed being a member of the Springfield Fraternal Order of the Eagles and the American Legion.

Generosity was a trait that came as second nature to Howard; he found great fulfillment in extending his support to veterans, animals, health research and children's organizations. To describe Howard as kind and generous seems almost an understatement, as his actions continuously amplified the depth of his character.

Graveside Service: 2:00 pm, Friday, October 24, 2025, at Camp Butler National Cemetery, where military honors will be conducted.

Memorial contributions may be made to Land of Lincoln Honor Flight.
