Harvard William Keefe, Jr., 89 of Springfield, passed away 10:35 pm, Friday, October 27, 2023 at Springfield Memorial Hospital. He was born April 21, 1934, in Pontiac, the son of Harvard W. and Doris M. (Hatfield) Keefe, Sr. He married Elizabeth “Betsy” Brown on December 23, 1955 and she preceded him in death on February 15, 1991. He then married Betty Sue Awalt Fulkerson on December 18, 1993 and she survives.
Also surviving are five daughters, Suzette (Barry) Keefe Pangrle of Cupertino, CA, Laura Hunt of Petersburg, Karen (Lance) Keefe Webster of Dolores, CO, Cynthia (Jim) Paoni of Riverton and Kathrine (Mike) Campbell of Jacksonville; nine grandchildren; two great grandchildren with one on the way.
Harvard is preceded in death by his parents; one sister Beverly “Bonnie” Jane Potts and two sons-in-law, Guy Hunt and Kevin Edwards.
Harvard is a United States Army veteran serving during the Korean Conflict, stationed in Italy. He graduated from U of I in Champaign and SIU Carbondale. He received his master’s degree from University of Georgia and taught business classes at Lincoln Land Community College.
He retired as President of Citizens Savings & Loan; he previously had worked in sales in the pharmaceutical industry.
Harvard grew up in Paxton and was a member of Petersburg United Methodist Church, Carlock Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, Springfield South Side Rotary Club, Springfield Flying Club, and Motor Boat Club.
Visitation: 5 – 8 pm, Wednesday, November 1, 2023 at Staab Funeral Home – Springfield. A Masonic Rite’s service will be held at 7:30 pm.
Funeral Service: 11:30 am, Thursday, November 2, 2023 at Staab Funeral Home – Springfield with Pastor Rick Pierce officiating. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery where military honors will be conducted.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions made to the Scottish Rite’s Children’s Dyslexia Center.
