James Ervin Clanton, 78, of Springfield, passed away on June 1, 2025. James was born in Jacksonville, IL on February 7, 1947, the son of Marion and Rosemary Delores (Carnahan) Clanton. He married the love of his life, Geraldine “Gerry” Hurst on June 12, 1971, and she survives.

Also surviving is his son, James (Jamie) Clanton; grandchildren, Megan (Damien) Hughes, Jeff (partner, Abby) Clanton, and Eric (Robyn) Clanton; several great-grandchildren; dad to several special children; and Mikey Greenwood, who was more like a son than a friend.

He is preceded in death by his parents; grandparents; brother, Steve Clanton; and nephew, Scott Clanton.

James was very active at Third Presbyterian Church. He was involved with the church by being an elder and deacon, volunteering as a Sunday school teacher and as a youth leader.

James was a United States Navy veteran. He worked as estimator for Fehring Ironworks for 35 years and retired from Selvaggio Steel after 20 years of service. He was a longtime member of the Sangamon Valley Campers Association. James grew up playing the accordion and won several State awards.

Memorial Gathering: 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm, Saturday, June 14, 2025, at Third Presbyterian Church.

Memorial Service: 2:00 pm, Saturday, June 14, 2025, at Third Presbyterian Church with Reverend Forrest Krummel officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to Third Presbyterian Church.
