Joe B. Carter, 84, of Sherman, passed away on Sunday, August 2, 2026, at HSHS St. John's Hospital. He was born on December 1, 1941, in Doniphan, MO, the son of Luke and Mildred (Bates) Carter and they preceded him in death.
He is also preceded in death by his sister, Olive Willis.
Survivors include his beloved wife, Linda (Barbee) Carter of Sherman; son, Jeff Carter of Sherman; grandchildren, Kaitlyn (Tre) Fry and Trey Carter, both of Sherman; great-grandson, Kohen Fry; and two siblings, Cheryle (Paul) Downs and Ed Carter, both of Sherman.
Joe was the proud owner of Carter Bros. Lumber, where he dedicated 50 years of hard work and service to his community. Outside of work, he had a passion for building street rods and took great pride in every project he completed. He enjoyed spending time on the golf course, bowling with friends, and fishing at Lake of the Ozarks. Joe also cherished the time he and his family spent at their Florida condo, where he could often be found enjoying another round of golf or simply soaking up the sunshine. A devoted St. Louis Cardinals fan, he rarely missed the opportunity to cheer on his favorite team. Above all, Joe treasured the simple moments spent doing the things he loved with the people he loved most.
A private family graveside service will be held at Walnut Hill Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Animal Protective League.
