John C. Brown, 84, of Springfield, passed away on Wednesday, May 17, 2023 at Springfield Memorial Hospital. He was born April 1, 1939 in Springfield, the son of Clinton N. and Ruth E. (Blakley) Brown. He married Bunny Volz on May 4, 1963 and she survives.

Also surviving are his daughter, Angela S. (Frank Teriet) Wells of Centralia, her three children, Devan (Libby), Elle and Cole Wells, and her grandchild, Lynin; son, Curt (Maureen Midden) Brown of Springfield, their two children, Zachary (LeAna) and Kelton Brown, and his grandchild, Amaya; sister, Kathy (Bill) Garrison of Springfield; two brothers, Frank (Donna) Brown of Valpraiso, IN and Fred (Diana) Brown of Springfield; sister-in-law, Maggie Brown of Decatur and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He is preceded in death by his parents and brother, Robert Brown.John retired from Honeywell, formerly known as Hobbs Manufacturing. He was in the United States Army National Guard from 1961 – 1967.

John was a lifelong resident of Springfield and attended Lanphier High School. He was of the Presbyterian faith and joined Third Presbyterian Church when he was younger. He was also a longtime member of the Mozart Social Club of Springfield. John enjoyed playing horseshoes and was the Captain of the Delaney’s Team. He will be missed by many and will be remembered by this saying: “He’ll argue for the people and with the people!”

 Memorial Gathering: 10 am – 12 pm, Wednesday, May 24, 2023 at Staab Funeral Home – Springfield.

Memorial Service: 12 pm, Wednesday, May 24, 2023 at Staab Funeral Home – Springfield. Burial will follow at McKinnie Cemetery.


Memorial contributions may be made to: St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital; Muscular Dystrophy Association Summer Camp; or to Make-A-Wish Foundation.
