John J. Gerding, 86, of Springfield died at 3:55 pm, Wednesday, December 24, 2025, peacefully at his home. He was born June 4, 1939, in Springfield, to Carl and Martha (Klein) Gerding. He married Dorothy Wright in 1961, they later divorced and he married Allene Brust, and she preceded him in death in 1990.
Also preceding him in death were his parents; two brothers, Henry and Charles Gerding; two sisters, Clara Ann Trello and Eleanor Gerding; and grandson, William Cole.
Survivors include his companion, Vickie Matula; daughter, Gina (Dani) Kreuzmacht of Springfield; son, John C. (Lisa Bea) Gerding of Springfield; six grandchildren, Connor (Ashley) Sullivan, Eryn Sullivan, Rylie (Blake) Samat, John (Paige Bradford) Gerding, Charlie and Henry Gerding; and sister, Martha Mayfield of Springfield.
John was a Bakery Manager at various Grocery Stores for more than forty-two years.
He was a member of St. Cabrini Church.
John enjoyed fishing, hunting and gardening. He will be remembered for being very generous with his tomatoes. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with family.
Visitation: 5:00 – 7:00 pm, Friday, January 2, 2026, at Staab Funeral Home – Springfield.
Funeral Service: 10:00 am, Saturday, January 3, 2026, at Staab Funeral Home – Springfield, with Reverend Ryan Kehoe officiating. A burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
