Joseph Samuel Maggio, 85, of Springfield, passed away at 7:11 pm, Friday, March 27, 2026, at his home. He was born February 7, 1941, in Springfield, the son of Anthony and Blanche (Green) Maggio. He married Bobbie Walbert on August 3, 1963, and she survives.

He is also survived by two children, Joe Maggio and Gina (Randy) Siddens, both of Springfield; two grandsons, Carson Joseph Randall Siddens and Dalton Anthony Samuel Siddens and several cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Joe was a member of St. Aloysius Church. He retired from the State of Illinois where he worked as a Senior Public Service Administrator.

Collecting Lionel Trains and model railroads was a big passion of his. He was a member of the Sangamon Central Railroad Club and served as its President. He was a huge sports fan and rooted for the Green Bay Packers, New York Yankees, Notre Dame Fighting Irish and SHG Cyclones. He attended Cathedral Boys High School.

Joe was very family orientated. His family was number one to him. If you were a friend of his, you were family to him. No one was more important to him than his two grandsons, Carson and Dalton. He never hesitated to talk about them or show you pictures of them and any of their achievements, especially their academic accolades.

They were quite simply the light of his life.

Joe was very involved with keeping in touch with those around him. He belonged to many Lionel Model Train Railroad groups. He has collected trains his entire life. You would find him every summer at the New Berlin County Fair running the train layout. He never missed a day.

Joe organized several different groups each and every month. He had lunches with his cousins monthly. He organized a retirement group lunch with friends from State Employees Retirement System and a breakfast club with his old classmates from Cathedral High School Class of 1959 every month as well.
