Martha K. Mayfield

Martha K. Mayfield passed away peacefully on August 16th 2026 at home. She was born in Springfield on December 18, 1941 to the late Martha and Carl Gerding. She married James Mayfield, Sr. on September 14, 1963 at SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church.

Martha was preceded in death by her brothers, Charles (Ruby) Gerding, Henry (Chris) Gerding, and John Gerding; sisters, Ann (Tom) Trello, and Eleanor Gerding; husband, Jim, in 2022; great-granddaughters, Harper and Quinn McCaffrey in 2025; and son, Michael, in 2026.

Survivors include her children, James (Beth) Mayfield, Jr., Mary (Dave) Dellert, John (Keri) Mayfield, Michelle (Tim) Sorenson, Anthony (Shelley) Mayfield, and Matt (Addie) Mayfield; grandchildren, Kayleigh (Mark) Marten, Alison (Nick) McGlasson, Hannah (Brandon) McCaffrey, Nick (Amanda) Dellert, Claire (Jacob) Schuette, Sammie Mayfield, Jane Sorenson, Zack (Kaylee) Dellert, Julia (Ben) Lange, Dan Sorenson, Maddie Mayfield (fiancé, Zack Eddington), Sophie Mayfield, Andrew Sorenson, Anna Mayfield, Jacob Mayfield, and Rowan and Ryan Mayfield; great-grandchildren, Maren and Emma Marten, Grayson and Mia Schuette, and Leo Lange; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Martha was a stay- at- home mom most of her early years of marriage. She was devoted to raising her 7 children and running the household. Martha eventually went back to work for the Diocese of Springfield, starting in 1987 with Office for the Deaf and then retired in 2014 from the office for Social Concerns. Martha received the Magnificat award in 2013 for her outstanding service to God and Neighbors. She was a devoted advocate for those who could not help themselves. Giving of her time and talent was woven into the fabric of her being. Martha was an amazing seamstress and had a knack for creativity. She will deeply missed by everyone whose lives she touched.

Visitation: 5:00 - 7:00 pm, Monday, August 24, 2026, at Staab Funeral Home - Springfield.

Funeral Mass: 10:00 am, Tuesday, August 25, 2026, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, with Reverend Manuel Cuizon officiating. A burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
