Mauri Formigoni, 82, of Springfield, passed away on Tuesday, July 16, 2024 at Country Lane Memory Care. She was born November 6, 1941, to Maurice and Dorothy Neeld Monihon who preceded her in death.

She is survived by her daughter, Tania (Kyle) Hollingsworth of Boulder, CO; her sons, Gregg (Cathy) Formigoni of Springfield, and Marco Formigoni of Carlsbad, CA; her six grandchildren, Zoe and Isabel Hollingsworth, Lauren (Ridge) Ackerman, Allison and Morgan Formigoni, Lynn Formigoni; and her brother, William Monihon of FL.

As an artist and educator, Mauri received her BA from Kalamazoo College in Michigan. She completed postgraduate studies at the Art Institute of Chicago and received her Master of Arts from Sangamon State University in Springfield, now UIS. Mauri began her career in Chicago, IL and later moved to Springfield to raise her family.

Mauri was a highly accomplished artist, often working on large installations utilizing materials such as fire, burned trees, birds and mosaics. Her work has been featured internationally including a Fulbright at the University of Belgrade in former Yugoslavia. Her work can still be seen in many public and private galleries and state/federal buildings. Her most recent show, A Career Retrospective, was held in 2023 at the Springfield Art Association.

Mauri loved her time exhibiting and teaching. She had a unique ability to connect with her students as Art Professor at University of IL – Springfield for over 20 years before retiring.

After retirement she moved to San Miguel de Allende, Mexico where she lived independently for 20 years. Mauri dedicated much of her time in Mexico saving dogs and volunteering with the local humane society.

Mauri was an incredible force of nature and will be deeply missed. 

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Springfield Art Association at www.springfieldartsco.org.

Cremation will be arranged by Staab Funeral Home – Springfield, with an inurnment at Oak Ridge Cemetery. Services are pending and will be announced shortly.
