Raymond L. McGill 76, of Springfield passed away on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, at St. John’s Hospital. He was born February 19, 1950, in Springfield, to Matthew and Esther Carter McGill. He married Cathy Barger on September 18, 1971, and she survives.
Also surviving are one daughter Casey (Tom) Riech of Springfield; one son, Ray M. McGill of Rochester; three grandchildren, Madison McGill, Emma Riech and Brantley Riech; sister-in-law, Rosie Greco of Springfield; Brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Spud and Margaret Hinds of Springfield; one nephew, Luke (Libby) Hinds; two nieces, April (Steve) Womack and Heather (Scott) Dickerson several great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Harold Greco and nephew Nick Greco.
Ray attended Lanphier High School, but was requested to terminate his enrollment. He then attended night school for his diploma, but that was terminated when he won the “Lotto” and was invited to join the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Conflict, an offer he could not refuse. Sadly, this was the only lotto he ever won.
During his service with the Army he was awarded the Purple Heart; Bronze Star and Combat Infantry Badge.
He retired in 2011 from the City of Springfield Public Works Street Department.
He was an avid Harley rider and enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping, but his greatest joy came from spending time with his grandkids.
Visitation: 5 – 7 pm, Thursday, April 9, 2026, at Staab Funeral Home– Springfield. The family requests casual attire for both visitation and the graveside service.
Graveside Service: 2:00 pm, Friday, April 10, 2026, at Camp Butler National Cemetery where military honors will be conducted.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Northenders VFW or Wounded Warrior Project.
