Richard Maurice “Rick” Highland, 81, of Holts Summit, passed away Tuesday, December 31, 2024, at St. Mary’s Hospital surrounded by his family.

He was born March 10, 1943, in St. Louis, Missouri, the son of the late Thomas Eugene and Shirley Maxine (McCoy) Highland.

Rick served in the United States Air Force from 1961-1965 during the Vietnam Era with a rank of Airman First Class.

He was united in marriage on October 2, 1965, in Springfield, Illinois to Barbara Ann Baker who survives at the home.

Rick worked for Horace Mann Insurance Company from 1967 until his retirement in 1999. At the time of his retirement, he served as the Director of Property Insurance. He previously worked for Illinois National Insurance Company from 1965-1967.

He was a member of St. Andrew Catholic Church in Holts Summit. He enjoyed golfing, working in the yard, exercising at the YMCA, assembling model cars-trucks-ships and planes, working on small wooden projects, and watching baseball and football.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Highland, Holts Summit; two children, Darren (Chrissy) Highland, Middleburg, FL; Dana (Patrick) Bexten, Freeburg; ten grandchildren, Alexander Highland, Alysha (Natalie) Highland, Trevor Highland, Travis Highland, Ryan Bexten, Cory Bexten, Tyler Bexten, Nicole (Benjamin) Thomas, Megan Nally, Lelsie (Noah) Smith-Pettit; four great-grandchildren, Rory Thomas, Emmett Thomas, Riley Thomas, Waylon Smith-Pettit, with Baby Smith-Pettit on the way; two sisters, Kathy (Mark) Becker, Athens, IL; and Deena Kater, Marigate, FL; and several nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held from 12:00 pm until time of services at 1 pm, Friday, January 10, 2025, at Staab Funeral Home – Springfield. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
