Ruby I. Chase, 98, of Springfield, passed away at 11:00 am, Saturday, August 15, 2026, at Oakland Hills Senior Living. She was born on December 29, 1927, in Loami, IL, the daughter of Dempsey and Cora (Fickas) Mayes. She married Benjamin F. Chase, Jr. on May 9, 1948, and he preceded her in death on March 4, 1999.
Also preceding her in death were her parents; infant daughter, Connie Marie Chase; two brothers, Robert and Junior Mayes; three sisters, Dorothy Cummings, Dora Hayes and Wilma Hudson and a son-in-law, Gary Hammond.
She is survived by two daughters, Janet Hammond of Springfield and Regina (Michael) Behnen of Pawnee; a son, Michael Chase of Creole Springs, IL; six grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; three brothers, Carl and John (Sue) Mayes, both of Girard and William (Nancy) Mayes of Springfield.
Ruby was an avid St. Louis Cardinal fan. She worked as a crossing guard in association with the Springfield Police Department at
McClernard School for 22 years. She loved gambling and traveling.

Funeral Service: 10:30 am, Monday, August 24, 2026, at Staab Funeral Home – Springfield with Thomas Burk officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery.
