Virginia Lee “Sue” Spinner, 89, of Pana, IL, passed away on August 18, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family and the faith that guided her throughout her life. She was born on March 2, 1937, in Taylorville, IL, and lived a life marked by devotion, kindness, and quiet strength.
Sue was a loving, faith-filled, and selfless woman whose greatest joy was her family. She was the beloved wife of Larry Spinner for 69 years, and together they built a life rooted in love, commitment, and Christian values. Their marriage was a beautiful witness to enduring devotion, and the example they set blessed all who knew them. They were wedded on October 27, 1956.
Sue was a cherished mother to Steven Spinner, Deborah Scott, Susan (Michael) Maziarz, Donald (Gina) Spinner, Timothy (Paula) Spinner, and Elizabeth Couty.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William Eli Furgeson and Erma Marcella Bingham Furgeson; parents-in-law, Joseph and Mary Spinner; brothers, Bill and Fred Furgeson; sisters, Elizabeth Furgeson and Esther Merle Furgeson; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Claudette Furgeson, Paula Sisk, Joe (Dorothy) Spinner, and Don Root; nieces and nephews, Anthony Warren, Mary Agnes, Cindi Hutchins, Brian Furgeson; and her son-in-law, Gene Scott, all of whom she held dear in her heart.
Sue was a proud grandmother to: Chrissy Austin, John (Amanda) Spinner, Amy (John) Oliver, Kathleen Scott, Mike Maziarz, Chelsie Spinner, David Maziarz, Megan (Carl) Marcin, Stevie (José) Saucedo, and Sara Scott; great-grandmother to: Daric, David, Jacob, Anderson, Aiden, Dash, Emilia, D’Arcy, and Charlotte and great-great-grandmother to: Bret. She treasured every visit, every conversation, and every moment spent watching her family grow. Her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchild were a constant source of happiness, and she delighted in their accomplishments, laughter, and presence.
She was also a loving sister to Sally Root of Taylorville and Bob (Anna) Furgeson of Taylorville. She is also survived by her beloved dog, Lilly and several nieces and nephews.
A woman of deep and abiding faith, Sue was a devout Catholic and a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Pana. Her faith was not only something she professed, but something she lived each day through her words, actions, and gentle spirit. She found strength in prayer, comfort in the sacraments, and peace in trusting God’s will. Her life was a reflection of humility, patience, and grace, and she shared her faith through the way she cared for others.
Sue dedicated more than 20 years of service as a cook at Lincoln Grade School, where she was known for her dependable work, her kind heart, and the care she showed to the children and staff she served. She understood that even the simplest acts of service could be a blessing, and she carried out her work with diligence and pride.
Sue truly enjoyed spending time with those she loved most. She found joy in the ordinary moments of life, especially when they were shared with family. Her home and her heart were always open, and she created a loving atmosphere that will be remembered by all who were fortunate enough to know her.
Sue will be remembered for the love she gave so freely, the faith she carried so faithfully, and the selfless example she set for her family and friends. Her life was a blessing, and her memory will remain a source of comfort and inspiration.
May she rest in the peace of Christ, and may perpetual light shine upon her.
Visitation: 2:00 – 4:00 pm, Sunday, August 23, 2026, at Staab Funeral Home – Springfield, beginning with a Vigil Prayer Service.
Funeral Mass: 10:00 am, Monday, August 24, 2026, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Pana, IL, with Rev. Joseph Havrilka officiating. A burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Pana, IL.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Pana, IL or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
