William “Bill” Paul Kanwischer, age 99, of Springfield, IL, passed away peacefully on April 9, 2026, at Springfield Suites, leaving behind a legacy of devotion, hard work, faith, and love for his family and community.

Bill was born on February 6, 1927, in Chicago, IL, to William and Olga (Lehman) Kanwischer. He grew up with strong family values that shaped the course of his life and carried those values with him in all that he did. A proud graduate of Crane Tech High School, he later continued his education at the University of Illinois in Chicago (or on “The Rock”, as many would say), where he built upon the determination and discipline that would serve him throughout his life.

Bill honorably served his country in the United States Navy during a time of great need. He was stationed in Washington State, where he worked reloading ammunition on ships. His service reflected his sense of duty and his willingness to contribute wherever he was needed. After completing his military service, he returned to civilian life and devoted his talents to a long and steady career. He retired after 34 years as an electrical draftsman for Motorola.

On October 18, 1952, Bill married the love of his life, Lorraine Joan Walinski. Their marriage was a lasting partners

hip built on love, commitment, and shared devotion to family. Lorraine preceded him in death on April 18, 2022. Together, they created a home filled with warmth, guidance, and enduring memories that will continue to be cherished by those who knew them best.

He is survived by his son, Ronald (Cindy Zumwalt) Kanwischer of Springfield, IL; his daughter-in-law, Adriana Kanwischer of Dousman, WI; his grandchildren, Katelyn (Brendan) Losch of Naperville, IL, Benjamin (Allie DeLarco) Kanwischer of Elmhurst, IL, and Giulia Kanwischer of Milwaukee, WI, and his great-grandchildren, Jack Kanwischer and Avery Kanwischer. He also leaves behind several nieces, nephews, and cousins who will remember him with affection.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; daughter, Susan Joan Kanwischer; his son, Donald Alan Kanwischer; and four siblings, Ella, Clara, Eda, and Ed.

Bill was a member of Resurrection Lutheran Church in Franklin Park, IL, where his faith was an important part of his life. When Lorraine and Bill moved to Myrtle Beach, SC, they attended Shepard of the Sea Lutheran Church where they felt connection and enjoyed worshipping there. He volunteered at various hospitals, offering his time and care to those in need, and he found great joy in his hobby as a model train aficionado.

Those who knew Bill will remember him as a kind, charming man with a good sense of humor. He could be opinionated and cranky but was always grateful for all that was offered to him. He lived a long life marked by dedication to others and by the simple, meaningful ways he showed love each day. His presence will be deeply missed, but his memory will remain a blessing to all who were fortunate enough to know him.

Cremation will be arranged by Staab Funeral Home – Springfield, and inurnment will take place at Mt. Emblem Cemetery – Elmhurst, IL at a later date.
