William J. Cox, 71, of Springfield, passed away on Saturday, May 23, 2026, at Jacksonville Skilled Nursing and Rehab. He was born on October 21, 1954, in Springfield, the son of John B. and Evelyn (Prohack) Cox. He married Pamela Kay (White) Cox on November 28, 1975, and she preceded him in death on April 20, 2016.

 He is also preceded in death by his parents.

 Survivors include his son, Jason (Jenna) Cox of Havana; daughter, Erin Cox of Springfield; stepson, Mic (Amanda) Cox of Springfield; stepdaughter, Amy Cox of Springfield; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; brother, John (Jan) Cox of Springfield; and nephew, Jonathan (Cindy) Cox.

 A graduate of Lanphier High School, William proudly served his country in the United States Army Reserves and was honorably discharged. His commitment to service continued throughout his life as a member of the American Legion and as a former member of Grace Baptist Church. 

 He served as Scoutmaster for Troop 26, where he guided and inspired many young scouts. He and his family also opened their home and hearts by raising foster children. Professionally, William worked as a security guard and retired from ELA Security after years of dedicated service. In his free time, he could often be found working on cars, fishing, or camping.

 Cremation rites will be accorded by Staab Funeral Home – Springfield. The family will host a Celebration of Life at a later date.

 Memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.
