William Verne Wiebking, 82, of Springfield, passed away peacefully late Saturday morning, December 20, 2025, at The Arc at Sangamon Valley.

He was born April 18, 1943, in Springfield, the son of Verne and Emily (Kochman) Wiebking.

William is survived by his companion, Patricia Pafundi of Springfield; his son, William S. (Lisa) Wiebking of Chatham, Virginia; two grandchildren, Samuel and Madeline Wiebking; his sister, Lynn Orlicki of Florida; and his nephew, Josh Orlicki of Maryland. He was preceded in death by his parents; his former wife, Carlynne; and two stepsons, Edward and Jeffrey Geary.

A consummate businessman, William was a lifelong entrepreneur whose career spanned sales and purchasing, with particular success in the automotive, salvage, and real estate industries. He had a sharp eye for opportunity, a frugal demeanor, and a practical mind.

William was a graduate of Illinois State University and a longtime member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Riverton, Illinois. Outside of work, he was an avid car enthusiast, boater, and cyclist. He took special pleasure in outsmarting telemarketers and never missed an opportunity for a well-timed prank. He was also a generous supporter of the Springfield Animal Protective League, reflecting his quiet compassion and love for animals.

The family will host a Celebration of Life at 10:00 am, Monday, December 29, 2025, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Riverton, IL.

William’s final message, delivered in his own unmistakable style: “I died.”

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
