Basil Antony Padanilam, age 65, of Springfield, passed away surrounded by family on July 24th, 2025. He is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife, Anne, his son Thom and wife Shivani, his son John and fiancée Sydney, and his siblings Babu, Betsy, Biji, Benzy, Binny, and Beena.

Basil was born in Changanassery, Kerala, India on May 13th, 1960 to P. J. Devasia Padanilam and Mary Padanilam. He grew up as the second oldest of his many beloved siblings. He graduated 1st in his class from St. Berchmans College with a bachelor’s in commerce and then became a chartered accountant. He was enterprising and creative, working a variety of jobs in India including partnering with friends in investment-related ventures and in founding a clothing boutique.

Basil married his wife, Anne, in 1991 and they welcomed their first son, Thom, in 1992. Later that year, he moved to the United States with four of his siblings, Babu, Benzy, Binny, and Beena. In 1996 he moved his family to Springfield, Illinois and found a job with Public Aid. In 1998, his second son, John was born. Basil later moved to the Revenue Department and spent the next 30 years building a successful career working for the state. In his time there, he helped the Illinois State Auditing Department become one of the most efficient systems in the nation.

Bringing people together was Basil’s passion. In his family, he was known as the “glue” who was always checking in with everyone and staying connected - he rarely missed a family call or reunion. He was the president of the Indian Association of Greater Springfield for many years, and he treasured the relationships and bonds he formed across the community. He welcomed new people with open arms and served as a liaison for those entering the community. Even as a man of few words, he was the life of every party. He loved to host gatherings and community events - he even became a self-taught DJ to express his love for music. His musical mixes delighted friends and family and were guaranteed to enhance any event. Outside of his community work he had many hobbies he enjoyed. He kept active until the end, playing badminton twice a week for many years and frequently playing with his son, John. He was also an avid gardener, chef, and mixologist.

Basil was a quiet and strong man who was dedicated to his family and community. His core values were taking care of others and becoming the best you can be at whatever you do. He will forever be remembered as a pillar of his community and a loving and caring husband, father, and dear friend to many. His values will live on through everyone who loves him.
