Diana L. Smith, 74, of Springfield, passed away on Tuesday, April 2, 2024 at Lewis Memorial Christian Village. She was born on May 12, 1949 in Springfield, to Harold Leigh and Leta M. Fancher Smith and they preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her sister-in-law, Julie Smith.

Diana is survived by her brother, David L. Smith of Springfield; nephews, Jeremy (fiancé, Jennifer Bietsch) of Springfield and Brian (Sarah Kern) Smith of Brooklyn, NY; two great-nieces, Anna and Julia Smith; and several cousins.

Diana was a lifelong resident of Springfield and was a 1967 graduate of Springfield High School. She went on to attend Eureka College for one year before being suddenly diagnosed with transverse myelitis. She lived with TM for 55 years and her positive coping was an inspiration for her family, friends and colleagues. Even with her condition, she was determined to work and help support herself. She did clerical work for Horace Mann and the IL League of Financial Institutions.

Diana was an active member of First Congregational United Church of Christ. Contributing was in her heart and she became a volunteer at Springfield Memorial Hospital. Many who knew her will remember her vibrant cheering of her beloved St. Louis Cardinals.

Cremation will be arranged by Staab Funeral Home – Springfield with no services, per Diana’s wishes
