Donald Otto Tertel 86, of Springfield, died at 12:12 am, Friday, January 26, 2024. He was born February 12, 1937 in Decatur, to Otto and Louise Kovalik Tertel. He married Leona Ruth Nika on May 27, 1960 and she preceded him in death on April 3, 1995.

Survivors include three children Kelly (Bill) Phillips of Springfield, Kay (Lyndon) Sill of Petersburg and Kim (Robert) Elmdanat of Channahon; five grandchildren, Donald Kauffman, Emily Boatman, Abagail Madanat, Kirsten Herkert and Steven Smythe; 13 great grandchildren; three sisters, Bernice Mihelsic of Springfield, Lil Marzinzik of Springfield and Helen Busarow of Collinsville; one brother, Bob Tertel of Racine, WI and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and one sister, Esther Holtzen.

He was a member of West Side Christian Church, where he was a choir member. He enjoyed fishing and was a Chicago Cubs, Bears and Bulls fan as well and an Illini fan. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren and all gatherings with family.

Visitation: 10:30 am – 12:30 pm, Tuesday, January 30, 2024 at Staab Funeral Home – Springfield.

Funeral Service: 12:30 pm, Tuesday, January 30, 2024, at Staab Funeral Home – Springfield with Pastor Donald Kauffman officiating. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery, where Military honors will be conducted.

Memorial contributions may be made to Moraine Valley Church for Student Camp Scholarships.
