Eugene “Gene” Lloyd Grieme, 77 of Springfield, passed away July 26, 2025. He was born November 25, 1947, in Springfield, IL, the son of Carroll and Gwendolyn (Walsh) Grieme. He married the love of his Janet K. Helm of 54 years.
He is survived by his wife; children, Brian Grieme, Nathan (Carrie) Grieme, Rebecca (Bradley) Loman; and grandchildren, Brayden Damm, Brett Loman, Benjamin Loman.
Eugene was a lifelong resident of Springfield. Eugene served in the Illinois Army National Guard for over 20 years and held the rank of Sergeant 1st Class. He attended Illinois Business College and worked at the State of Illinois Department of Revenue for 41 years.
Gene loved to meet new people and to connect with long time friends. There was not a person in the world that he could not connect with and share a conversation. He was always optimistic and always looked on the brighter side of life. He was a loving and caring husband, a devoted father, and dedicated grandfather. His biggest passion was being a grandpa and had a strong relation with his oldest grandchild, Braydan, He was Braydan’s biggest fan and rarely missed any of his sporting events.
His love for all sports fueled many conversations. He was an avid fan of the Cubs and Northwestern. Watching any sport on tv was a favorite pastime.
He loved to read all types of books, papers, and articles. He loved and cared deeply for his family and looked forward to opportunities when they spent time together.
Gardening and yard work was something he looked forward to in the springtime.
Eugene sang in the Adult Choir, Faithful Men’s Choir, and assisted in the library at West Side Christian Church. He was a faithful member of West Side for over 50 years.
Visitation: 4 – 6 pm, Thursday, July 31, 2025, at West Side Christian Church.
Funeral Service: 6:00 pm, Thursday, July 31, 2025, at West Side Christian Church with Pastor Cindy Lash officiating.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 am, Friday, August 1, 2025, at Paradise Cemetery in Salem, IL.
Memorial contributions may be made to Lutheran High School for a scholarship for his grandson, Braydan Damm.
