Frances “Louise” Block, 94 of Springfield, died on March 3, 2025, at River Birch Assisted Living Center. Louise was born on March 12, 1930 at her grandparents, William and Ina Herberger farm, near Berry, IL.

She was the only child of Frank and Pauline (Herberger) Turner. She was raised in Pawnee, IL and they moved to Springfield when she was 16 years old. She graduated in 1948 from Springfield High School.

She was working part time at Sears downtown Springfield in the credit department. That is where she met the love of her life, Harvey Block. What a great blessing from God.

They were married June of 1952 at Immanuel Lutheran Church where they were members, united till his death in 1998.

They had three children, Tim (Lynn) Block, Mark (Cheryl) Block, and Krista (Tim) Wilkerson; five grandchildren, Amanda Block, Alex Block, Daniel (Brianna) Wilkerson, Kevin Wilkerson, and Rachel Wilkerson and two great grandchildren, Vera and Gavin Wilkerson.

When her children were all in school, she went to work for Springfield School District Food Service Department. She worked there for 28 years serving her last 5 years as the Food Service Director, retiring in 1991. She was also a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church.

Louise and Harvey did a lot of traveling both in the United States and abroad. After his death she and friends traveled with Bob Green’s Trips. Thanks to those friends for making her life fun and meaningful in the sad days of missing her beloved husband.

Louise was also a huge sports fan of all teams of Illinois, Illini, Bulls, and her favorite the CUBS! She loved her family and always thanked God for his many blessings.

Private family services are being held, and she will be laid to rest with her husband at Camp Butler National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Mini O’Beirne Crisis Nursery or Lutheran High School.
