Fred “Fritz” H. Greenwald, 95, of Springfield, passed away on Tuesday, June 11, 2024 at Bridge Care Suites in Springfield. He was born October 17, 1928 in Manitowoc, WI, to Alfred and Viola Broeker Greenwald. He married Rita A. Harlow on November 17, 1951 and she preceded him in death on May 22, 2023.

Fred is also survived by two daughters, Mary (Tom) Cartwright of Columbus, OH and Margaret “Maggie” (Mark) DeTardo of Fleming Island, FL; four sons, Mark (Terri) Greenwald of Springfield, John (Natalie) Greenwald of Springfield, Peter (Anne) Greenwald of Midlothian, VA and Dr. James Greenwald of Springfield; thirteen grandchildren, Elizabeth Cartwright, Catherine Cartwright, Christopher (Cara) Greenwald, Lynde Greenwald, Matt Hatcher, Jon (Alexis) Embrey, Teresa Greenwald, Janie Mei Greenwald, Steven (Cori) DeTardo, Laura DeTardo, Katie DeTardo, Katrina (Chris) Hadnot, Nate Greenwald, Jacqueline Greenwald and Molly Greenwald; twelve great-grandchildren, Abby, Maddie, Aubrey, Sydney, Olivia, Aubrey, Harrison, Stella, Yakabo, Eli, Hannah and Bella; one son-in-law, Jeff Reno of New Berlin; sister-in-law, Catherine Greenwald of Manitowoc, WI, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Rita; daughter, Jean Reno; sister, Eunice Lochmann; two brothers, Daniel and Alfred Greenwald; and one infant son, Patrick.

Fred was a longtime and faithful member of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.

He was a US Army veteran, serving during the Korean War.

Fred graduated from St. Norbert College in De Pere, WI and received his graduate degree from the University of Wisconsin in Madison, WI. He was a member of the Springfield Municipal Band for forty-four years and the Capital Area Concert Band for twenty-five years, including many years as director. He was musical director of several Springfield Muni Opera shows and played in numerous others. Fred loved playing and listening to all music, especially classical, big band and jazz.

Fred taught at Springfield College in Illinois in the Music Department for 31 years. He also gave private lessons and served as an adjunct instructor at Lincoln Land Community College and Sangamon State University. Since his retirement in 1999, Fred shared many memories of former students and maintained contact with many of them. A long life brings many joys and sorrows, and the passing of former students deeply affected Fred.

Fred’s children are grateful for the many life skills, lessons and values he and our mother, Rita, imparted to us.

Visitation: 2:00 – 5:00 pm, Sunday, June 16, 2024 at Staab Funeral Home – Springfield.

Funeral Mass: 10:30 am, Monday, June 17, 2024 at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception with Rev. Brian Alford officiating.

Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery where military honors will be conducted.
