George L. Parnell, Sr. 99, of Springfield, died at 12:46 pm, Thursday, March 14, 2024 at his home. He was born July 21, 1924 in Springfield, to Dewey L. and Teresa Nelch Parnell. He married Frances Lockhart and she preceded him in death on May 3, 1969.

He was also preceded in death by his companion, Juanita Hodack; three grandchildren, Eddie Verardi, Shane Parnell and Larry Parnell and six siblings, LaSalle Parnell, Tessie Krimle, Neva Sauer, Delores Cleeton, Donna Priddy and Norma Smith.

Survivors include his five children, Charles Parnell of Rochester, Theresa Verardi of Springfield, Barb (Jim) Cheak of Conway, AR, George (Aro) Parnell, Jr. of Springfield and Dave Parnell of Springfield; eleven grandchildren, thirty-five great grandchildren; seven great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

George was a US Army veteran serving in the 29th Division during WWII.

He worked as a brick mason for Local 8, starting in 1946. He was a member of International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers. He enjoyed traveling and renovating homes.

Private family services are being held at Camp Butler National Cemetery, where military honors will be conducted.
