Gerald "Jerry" Wilson, of Springfield, passed away peacefully on October 27, 2024, at the age of 87.
Jerry was born on August 21, 1937 and raised by his mother, Mabel Wilson. He was preceded in death by his cherished mother, Mabel, brother, Robert Dean Smith, sister-in-law, Margaret Smith, and nephew Robert Eugene Smith.
Jerry served his country in the United States Army from January 22, 1962, to January 21, 1964. During his time as a Military Police Officer at Fort Hood, Texas, he earned the Good Conduct Medal, Expert Rifleman, and Driver's Badge awards.
Jerry then began his career with the United States Postal Service in 1964. As a mail carrier, he proudly served the citizens of Springfield for 50 years, earning his place in the prestigious Million Mile Club, and maintaining a lifetime membership with the National Association of Letter Carriers.
Jerry had a passion for sports and spent countless hours cheering for his favorite teams, the Fighting Illini and the Chicago Bears.
Known as "Uncle Magoo" by many of his nieces and nephews, his quick wit, storytelling, and genuine love for his family will always be remembered.
Jerry is survived by his brother Thomas (Sandy) Wilson, nieces and nephews: Therese (Rich) Vinson, Steve Smith, Kris Smith, Susan Wilson, and Mary Jane Wilson. His great nieces and nephews include Mindy (Brent) Ashbaugh, Shannon McCloud, RJ (Kimberly) Smith, Megan Smith, Rebecca (Manny) Padilla, and Bob Smith, along with several great-great nieces and nephews.
A Graveside Ceremony will take place at 11:00 am, Monday, Nov. 4, 2024, at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield, where military honors will be conducted.
The family is being served by Staab Funeral Home.
