Harold L. Payne, 78, of Springfield passed away at 7:41 pm, Friday, February 27, 2026, at Springfield Memorial Hospital. He was born December 12, 1947, the son of the late John and Lucille (Hess) Payne. He married Cherie Guimard on October 14, 1972, and she preceded him in death May 15, 2024.
He is survived by his two beloved children, Chad R. Payne of Springfield and Rachel (Jason) Voyles of New Berlin; three grandchildren, Bryce (Taylor) Barnes, Farrah Barnes and Ryker Barnes; great grandson, Gatlin Barnes; sister, Diane (Jerry) Casper of Rochester; brother, Todd Payne of Springfield and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Harold attended Church of the Little Flower. He was a United States Navy veteran and served during the Vietnam War, receiving the Navy Achievement Medal with Combat “V”. He was a member of VFW Post 755, 9th Infantry Division/ Mobile Riverine Force Association, Springfield Philatelic Society, S.A.M. Club, Lefthanders Gun Club in Loami and Starlight Campers. Harold enjoyed building military models, loved photography and was a huge muscle car enthusiast.
He owned and operated Harolds Phillip 66 filling station in Springfield and then went onto work most of his life at Hobbs Corporation from 1978 – 2009. After Hobbs Corporation closed, Harold went on to retire from Caterpillar in Decatur.
Visitation: 11 am – 1pm, Friday, March 6, 2026, at Staab Funeral Home – Springfield.
Funeral Service: 1:00 pm, Friday, March 6, 2026, at Staab Funeral Home - Springfield with Reverend Al Kemme officiating. Burial will follow at Farmington Cemetery where military honors will be conducted by the United States Navy and Sangamon County Interveterans Burial Detail and the United States Navy, Department of Defense.
