James "Jim" Edward Shaner, Sr. of Chatham, died at 8:28 am, Sunday, October 22, 2023 at St. John’s Hospital. He was born December 19, 1936 in Chicago to Walter Louis and Stephanie Ann (Myskowsky) Shaner. He married Suzanne Adele Coppens on April 29, 1967 in Chicago and she survives.

Also surviving are two sons, James (Theresa) Shaner, Jr of Springfield and Eric Shaner of Chatham and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Norbert and Donald Shaner and one sister, LaVerne Sikowich.

Jim was employed by the Illinois Army National Guard for 37 years, 8 months and 15 days, retiring as a Sergeant First Class. He was a resident of Chatham for 49 years and a member of St. Joseph the Worker Church in Chatham. He enjoyed model railroading, woodworking, and traveling with his family. He was involved in Springfield Right to Life and was dedicated to many other endeavors over the years.

Visitation: 3:00-5:00 pm, Sunday, October 29, 2023 at St. Joseph the Worker Church. A second visitation will be held from 10:00 - 10:45 am, Monday, October 30, 2023 at St. Joseph the Worker Church.

Funeral Mass: 11:00 am, Monday, October 30, 2023 at St. Joseph the Worker Church with Rev. Joseph Molloy officiating. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery where military honors will be conducted.

Memorial Contributions may be made to Springfield Right to Life or St. Joseph the Worker Church.
