James “Jim” Vincent Thornton, 95, of Springfield, died at 1:16 am, Sunday, April 14, 2024 at home. He was born April 5, 1929, in Springfield, to Lynn Elwood and Margaret (Owens) Thornton.

Survivors include nine children, Bonnie McLaughlin of Springfield, Gary Thornton of Chatham, Bob Thornton of Springfield Jamie Thornton of Springfield, Mike Thornton of Springfield, Kelly Thornton of Springfield, Sean Thornton of Bloomington, Lenny Thornton of Chatham, and James Thornton Jr. of Springfield; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; and one brother, Harry Thornton of Pawnee.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Janet; one sister, Frances Schleyhahn, and two brothers, Russell and Lynn Thornton.

Jim was a member of Faith Bible Church. He was a US Navy Veteran serving during WWII.

He retired from the US Postal Service after thirty years as a mail carrier.

Jim owned and piloted small airplanes. He was a member of Illinois Pilots Association and the American Postal Union.

Visitation: 10:00 – 11:30 am, Tuesday, April 23, 2024 at Staab Funeral Home – Springfield.

Funeral Service: 11:30 am, Tuesday, April 23, 2024 at Staab Funeral Home, with Pastor Curt Daniel officiating. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery, where military honors will be conducted.

Memorial contributions may be made to Charlie Wells Memorial Breakfast.
