James “Jim” W. McDermott, 82, of Springfield, passed away on Monday, November 8, 2021 at his home. He was born July 19, 1939, the son of John and Mary (Kelly) McDermott. He married Rosalie A. Decatoire on June 11, 1960 and she survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Valerie A. McDermott of Springfield and Susan (Stephen) Coady of Chatham; one son, Michael (Leigh) McDermott of Springfield; four grandchildren, Ashleigh McDermott, Anthony Selvaggio, and Olivia and Morgan Coady; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He is preceded in death by his parents; one brother, John McDermott; two sisters, Patricia Steller and Delores Wasilewski; and one grandson, Bradley Selvaggio.

Jim was a resident of Springfield all his life. He graduated from St. Patrick’s Grade School and Cathedral Boys Highschool. He was a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church. Jim had superb work ethic. He was a member at Laborers’ Local 477 for 64 years and Teamsters Local 916 and worked at Evan’s Construction, retiring after 38 years of service. Jim had an eye for craftsmanship and helped many of his family and friends with their homes. He was a huge fan of Notre Dame and enjoyed watching NASCAR.

Visitation: 5 – 7 pm, Monday, November 15, 2021 at Staab Funeral Home – Springfield.

Funeral Mass: 10 am, Tuesday, November 16, 2021 at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, with Reverend George Nellikunnel officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Aloysius Catholic Church.
