James “Jimmy” Michael Cary, 73, of Cantrall, IL, passed away at 4:54 am, Wednesday, October 2, 2024, at Springfield Memorial Hospital. He was born March 7, 1951, in Springfield, to Robert L. Steller and Shirley E. Cary. He married Joyce I. Wooley on July 31, 1982, and she survives.
Also surviving are one daughter, Lori Beth (Jeremiah) Huddleston of Mechanicsburg; one son, Matthew (Laura) Cary of Charolette, NC; five grandchildren, Brittney (Jacob) Setzer, Keegan David Huston, Allison (Austin) Hatch, Amelia Cary, and Iain Cary; three great grandchildren, Kayden, Raelynn, and Nora; one sister, Cathy (Lindy) Richards; one niece, Lindsay Richards; two nephews, Christian Wooley and Josh Wooley; and many loving aunts, uncles, and cousins.
He is preceded in death by his parents; and a great grandson, Jacob Setzer, Jr.
Jimmy served in the United States Army and was a Sergeant 101st Airborne during the Vietnam War. He was a resident of Cantrall for 42 years and retired as a communications equipment tech II for the State of Illinois, Department of Corrections.
Jimmy was a man of faith who attended Athens Christian Church. He had many hobbies including being an amateur radio operator and an art painter enthusiast. Jimmy was also involved in many organizations including the Macoupin County Amateur Radio Club, Menards Archers, and the Prairie Land Dulcimer Club.
Visitation: 9:00 – 10:00 am, Monday, October 7, 2024 at Athens Christian Church.
Funeral Service: 10:00 am, Monday, October 7, 2024 at Athens Christian Church with Pastor Ken Gennicks officiating. Burial will follow at Strode Cemetery, Cantrall, IL, where military honors will be conducted.
