James Terry Ransom, 83, of Springfield, IL, passed away on Saturday, July 13, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on March 24, 1941, in Champaign, IL, the son of James and Esther Crosslin Ransom. He married his love, Rosemary Curry on May 30, 1992, and she survives.
Also surviving Terry is a daughter, C. Dawn Ransom of Springfield, IL; two sons, James Ransom of Springfield, IL, and Darren C. Ransom of Hillsboro, IL; numerous grandchildren; great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren; stepdaughter, Jennifer Compton of Omaha, NB; and stepson, Charles Compton of Atlanta, GA; and many other beloved family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents and stepmother, Florence Ransom.
Terry attended and graduated from Lanphier High School. He attended IL College in Jacksonville. He served our country from 1960-1963 with the United States Army. He became the Title Six Coordinator for the Illinois Department of Transportation, retiring in 2004.
Terry had a servant’s heart and volunteered for the American Red Cross, Boy Scouts (over 40 years), and very active at his churches, including Capital City Church of God & Fresh Visions Church. He was a lifelong student and researcher of the Underground Railroad System, which was a passion of his.
Visitation: 10:00 – 11:00 am, Saturday, July 20, 2024, at Fresh Visions Community Church, 1551 J. David Jones Pkwy, Springfield, IL.
Funeral Service: 11:15 am, Saturday, July 20, 2024, at Fresh Visions Community Church with Pastor Roy Newman officiating. Cremation will be arranged by Staab Funeral Home – Springfield following the funeral.
A private burial will take place at Camp Butler National Cemetery, where military honors will be conducted.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Red Cross or to the American Cancer Society.
