John McQuillan, 74, of Springfield, passed away on Friday, May 31, 2024 at HSHS St. John’s Hospital. He was born on January 5, 1950 in Elgin, IL to John, Jr. and Marcy Haeger McQuillan. He married Marilou “Malou” Gil in 1994 at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church and had 30 years of cherished marriage.

He is survived by his wife, Malou; children, Ilia (Fernando) Del Angel of Riverside, IL, Devin (Ashley) McQuillan of Pleasant Plains, Keenan (Ryan) Kittell of Springfield, and Ethan McQuillan of Springfield; seven grandchildren, Nevaeh, Sophia, Eleanor, Audra, Nali, Isla, and Syae; brother, David (Linda) McQuillan of White Hall; nieces and nephews, Eric, Daniel, Andrea, Catherine, Emily, Matthew, and Luke; and former wife, Virdell McQuillan.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Phillip McQuillan.

John was a graduate of North Greene High School in White Hall. He also received his bachelor’s degree in English & Literature at Illinois Wesleyan, then went on to obtain his master’s degree in Mathematics at Illinois State University. He continued his education and obtained his law degree from the University of Illinois– Urbana/Champaign.

Right out of law school, John worked as a law clerk at the 3rd District Appellate Court in Ottawa, IL. He then went on to work for the Illinois Attorney General’s office for 17 years. He also worked as a cashier at Wal-Mart on Dirksen for 30 years.

John resided in Springfield for most of his life. He loved to read almost anything, including science fiction and history. He especially enjoyed watching the original Star Trek and The Twilight Zone. He loved his role as a husband, father, grandfather, brother and son and will be dearly missed, especially his wonderful sense of humor.

Cremation is being arranged by Staab Funeral Home – Springfield.

Family will host a Memorial Gathering on Saturday, June 8, 2024, from 3:00 – 4:00 pm at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church and a Memorial Mass will follow at 4:00 pm with The Rev. Shawn W. Denney officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 1218 S Grand Ave E, Springfield, IL.
