John Philip Schmit, 83 of Arlington Heights, formerly of Springfield, passed away at 9:50 am, Tuesday, February 10, 2026, at Waverly Inn Memory Care in Arlington Heights, IL. He was born September 26, 1942, in Chicago, IL the son of Frank Andrew and Mary (Kane) Schmit. He married Patricia Herlan August 10, 1998, and she preceded him in death on May 19, 2022.

 He was also preceded in death by his parents and sister, Jeanne McCoy.

 He is survived by two brothers, Jerry (Anita, deceased) Schmit of Arlington Heights and Robert (Mary) Schmit of Lindenhurst, IL.

 John was a United States Marine Corps veteran serving during the Vietnam War. He was a graduate of Loyola University in Chicago and the University of Northern Illinois.

 He was an attorney and had been the corporation counsel for the City of Springfield for more than 20 years.

 A graveside service will be held at 1:00 pm, Friday, February 27, 2026, at Camp Butler National Cemetery, where military honors will be conducted by the United States Marine Corps and the Inter-Veterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County.
