John Vargas, 77, of Springfield, IL, peacefully passed into the presence of the Lord on Thursday, August 28, 2025. He was born to Flor Marie Toro and Juan Vargas in New York, New York on June 28, 1948.

His survivors include his wife, Judy Vargas; Son, Nick Meyer (wife Katie) of San Antonio, Texas; daughter, Jennifer Vargas of Springfield, Illinois; son, John M. Vargas of Denver, Colorado and one grandson, Gave Meyer of Fredericksburg, Texas.

John began his Springfield career on March 15, 1974 when he was hired as the Director of Sangamon County Juvenile Center. In 1977, he was appointed to the position of Director of the Sangamon County’s Juvenile and Court Services. He retired on March 14, 2006 after 32 years of service.

His love for God was evidenced by his gift of encouragement and his matter-of-fact guidance as an Elder at Hope Evangelical Free Church.

John was a walking baseball encyclopedia, and he visited 25 of the 30 major league baseball stadiums. In honor of John’s love of baseball and buffets, his Celebration of Life will be held on September 20, 2025 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Home Plate Bar & Grill, 2571 S. Koke Mill Rd., Springfield, IL. 62711. We’ll gather in the patio area and celebrate John’s life.

If you are so inclined, you may make a donation in his memory to Hope Evangelical Free Church, or the Alzheimer’s Association.
