June Louise {Kroutter} Campbell, 93, of Springfield, Illinois and formerly of Chester, Illinois passed away peacefully on September 19th, 2025, at her home in Concordia Village in Springfield, Illinois. She was surrounded by her children as the Lord said, “It is time, June, come home”. June was born to Thomas and Katherina Kroutter on June 1, 1932, in Mobile, Alabama and raised by her mother and stepfather Albert Roh, as well as by her loving grandmother Anna Marie Schettler.

 She met Fred (Rev. Charles F. Campbell, called to heaven in 2019), the love of her life, on a girl’s trip to Biloxi, Mississippi, at a USO dance (Fred was new to the Air Force and assigned to Keesler AFB). They married March 20, 1953, just days prior to his first assignment at Nellis Air Force Base in Reno, Nevada to train at fighter pilot school. After 21 years of being an Air Force wife and mother, she graduated to being a Pastor’s wife and full-time mother of 4 where she served the Lord for 20 more years in Chester at St. John Missouri Synod Lutheran Church.

 June’s love for music started in the front hall of her first home in Mobile, singing along to the piano player with family. While in Anchorage, Alaska (Elmendorf AFB) she was part of a women’s chorale for several seasons. As the family moved where the Air force sent them, music remained important to her. She directed the church choir in Bellevue, NE (Offutt AFB), and was a regular French horn player in the Chester Muni Band. June was an alto in the St. John choir and played the bells in the bell choir for years. All her children can attest to the many vinyl marching band and show tunes albums in their collection, and all friends & grandkids enjoyed pumping on the player piano and singing along with the music over holidays.

June taught children’s Sunday School, and many women’s home Bible Studies. To love the Lord was to teach, disciple, befriend, comfort, always pray with others, be a Godly example to her children, grandchildren and even to her great grandchildren. June was constantly sharing her time and talents to further the mission of the church. Active in LWML from the local to national level, Ladies’ aide, quilting groups, Braille workers, Meals on Wheels, and working with dad in the church kitchen making coffee cakes for PTL. She was blessed to support many of her missionary friends over the years and loved to save their letters and email updates so that she could pray for them and their ministry.

June is survived by all of her children: Laura Catherwood,(widow of Gary) of Springfield , IL, Kathy Farish (Jim), of Mobile, AL, Craig Campbell (Joan), of Shiloh, IL and Susan McClure (Mike) of Chester, IL; her 13 grandchildren: Brian, Curt and Bethany (Laura & Gary), Daniel, Nathan, Jacob & Joel (Kathy & Jim), Colin and Katelyn (Craig & Joan) and Michael, Jennifer, Christine & Elizabeth (Susan & Mike). These grandchildren have fond memories Grandma always had homemade popsicles and frosted animal crackers in the freezer. In addition, June has 20 great grandchildren and one on the way from coast to coast, but mostly within Illinois area. She enjoyed their visits, setting up her Wii bowling and baseball for them, going to 4th of July parades and fireworks, school programs and recitals, and many plays at the Chester High School.

 June carried one of the higher Wii bowling averages at Concordia Village, where she played on a team for years, participated in Hand & Foot card games, weekly Bible studies, ladies’ dinners on Monday and Tuesday evenings, and thoroughly enjoyed her deep friendships made over the years.

 “All the way my Savior leads me;

Oh, the fullness of His love!

Perfect rest to me is promised

In my Father’s house above;

When my spirit, clothed immortal,

Wings its flight to realms of day

This my song through endless ages:

Jesus led me all the way.” Fannie J. Crosby
