Margaret Ann Timoney, 89, of Springfield died on Saturday, March 8, 2025 at her home surrounded by her family.

Margaret was born on March 2, 1936, in Springfield, the daughter of Harold and Mary Madelyn Hannah Carter. She married Lawrence “Larry” Timoney on July 28, 1956 in Springfield.

Margaret was a lifelong resident of Springfield’s north-end and member of St. Joseph’s Church, as were her parents and grandparents. She attended St. Joseph Grade School, graduated from Ursuline Academy in 1954, and attended Springfield College in Illinois.

Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, Larry, who died in 2000; her parents and sisters, Catherine (Bob) Byrnes of Houston, TX and Janet (Don) Humphrey, of Columbia, MO.

Margaret is survived by her six children; Paula Timoney (Emile Snijders) of St. Petersburg, FL, Kevin Timoney (Jean Bruner Jachino) of Springfield, Marty Timoney of Tarpon Springs, FL, Laura “Mickey” (John) Dearing of Jacksonville, IL, Tim (Cindy) Timoney of Springfield, and Bridget Timoney of Springfield; four grandsons Michael (Kayla) Timoney of Springfield, Ryan (Laura) Timoney of Burr Ridge, IL, Conner (Estefania) Timoney of Tampa, FL, and Tyler Dearing (Rachael Cook) of St. Louis; six great-grandchildren Margaret “Maggie” Ann and Savannah Mae (Michael & Kayla), Lachlan James, Remy Elizabeth, and Rory Kathryn (Ryan & Laura), and Hudson Carter (Conner & Estefania); and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family would like to thank Pam Szerletich, who became a part of the family after seven years of serving as Margaret’s caregiver and friend. They would also like to recognize the Memorial Home Hospice staff who cared for Margaret these past few months.

Margaret greeted everyone she met with a warm smile and treated everyone with dignity and respect. She was the ultimate caregiver of her family, friends, and neighbors. It didn’t matter who you were - family, friend, or a stranger off the street; there was always a seat at the table. It didn’t matter who you were - family, friend, or a stranger off the street; there was always a seat at the table.

Margaret’s Catholic faith was very important to her. She attended daily mass and was active in her parish community. She took the Ursuline motto of “Serviam” to heart, always putting the needs of others before her own. Throughout her life, she actively volunteered at Ursuline Academy, St. Joseph School and Church, Griffin High School, Sacred Heart Griffin High School, St. John’s Breadline, St. Joseph’s Home, Daily Bread, Meals on Wheels, and the Senior Citizens Center.

Margaret enjoyed collecting nativity sets and holy family figurines. She shared this love with family and friends as she regularly gifted porcelain nativity sets, handmade by her Aunt Dorothy and Uncle Charlie Carter, for wedding presents.

Margaret enjoyed baking and was known for sharing her delicious Gooey Butter Cake at every family, school, church and sporting event.

Margaret was extremely proud of her Irish heritage. She was honored to have been chosen as Springfield’s Irishwoman of the Year by the Sons & Daughters of Erin in 2016.

Margaret loved working with numbers. After retiring from the City of Springfield, she took college accounting and tax prep classes. She enjoyed helping family, friends, and people at the Senior Center with completing their taxes. She also counted money at St. Joseph’s Church on a weekly basis.

Margaret enjoyed traveling with her family and friends - making frequent trips to visit family in Texas, Missouri and Florida. Her adventures included trips to Ireland, Washington DC, Disney World, an Alaskan cruise, driving up Pike’s Peak and white water rafting in Colorado.

Margaret enjoyed watching and attending sporting events. She was a proud cheerleader for her kids and grandkids. She herself was a competitive bowler and later in life discovered Wii bowling. She relished her beloved Chicago Cubs finally winning the World Series in 2016.

When Margaret was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2013, she decided to confront the illness head-on. In order to maintain her independence at home, she researched medications and strategies, participated in daily physical and mental exercises, and increased her social interactions with family and friends.
