Michael Gordon Downs, 75, of Springfield, IL, passed away on Wednesday, August 27, 2025. Michael was born on July 4, 1950, in Du Quoin, IL, to Robert Dean and Patricia Ann (Bennett) Downs. He married the love of his life, Karen S. Brooks, on July 9, 1971, and she survives.

 He is also survived by his sons, Brad (Leah) Downs of Wapella, IL and Jefferson (Melanie) Downs of Houston, TX; grandchildren, Brittany (Hunter) Flentje, Rebecca (Jaycob Johnson) Downs, Gregory Downs, Micah (Bonnie Martin) Downs, Soren (Corey Harbin) Downs, Isabella Downs, and Sierra (Miguel) Estrada; great-grandchildren, Casey, Bennett, Riley, Lanie, Axeton, Rennix, Yar’Meire, Willow Mae, Corey, Elijah, and Josiah; sisters, Gaila Glass of Riverton, IL and Karen (Don) Bauer of Fairfield, OH; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and his four legged companions, Cali and Boots.

 He is preceded in death by his parents; infant sister, Janet Downs; and other beloved family.

 After graduating from Du Quoin High School in 1969, Michael dedicated 35 years as a coal miner for Freeman United at Crown II in Virden, IL.

 Michael was of the Baptist faith and his love of the Lord showed through his joy and love for people. Michael's love for his family was immense, and he found great joy in Facetime calls and visits from his grandchildren.

 In retirement, Michael was able to do many of his favorite hobbies including bowling five times a week, participating in numerous golf leagues, and enjoying time spent outdoors fishing and hunting. Nothing brought him more joy than watching his grandchildren play baseball, football, track, wrestling, volleyball and softball.

 Michael will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

 Visitation: 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm, Sunday, August 31, 2025, at Staab Funeral Home – Springfield.

 Funeral Service: 5:00 pm, Sunday, August 31, 2025, at Staab Funeral Home – Springfield with Pastor Russ Barton officiating. Cremation will be arranged by Staab Funeral Home – Springfield following services.

 Memorial contributions may be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
