Richard Alan Adkins

Richard Alan Adkins, 69, of Springfield, passed away on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, at Springfield Memorial Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. He was born January 20, 1957, in Springfield, the son of David C. and Norma (Hart) Adkins. He married Margaret C. Skandera on June 14, 1981, and she survives.

Also surviving are his four sons, Philip (Catherine) Adkins of Fountain, CO, Eric (Dara) Adkins of Highlands Ranch, CO, Scott Adkins of Springfield, and Keith Adkins of Springfield; five grandchildren, Natalie, Coy, Paul, Alexandria, and Ian Adkins; two sisters, Debra (Karl) Freburg of Carmel, IN and Diane (Tom) Wilson of Chatham; and four brothers, David (Ruth) Adkins of Chatham, Gary Adkins of Springfield, John Adkins of Springfield, and James "Jim" (Shirley) Adkins of Chicago.

He is preceded in death by his parents and sister-in-law, Karen Adkins.

Rich was dedicated to serving his community and especially enjoyed giving his time to youth organizations and activities. Over the years, he served as a Cub Scout Den Leader, Boy Scout Troop Leader and Scoutmaster, and coached various sports. He also served as President of the Southwest Baseball League, volunteered as a historical interpreter at Lincoln’s New Salem State Historic Site, and served as President of the New Salem Lincoln League. Rich also loved to travel, with some of his favorite destinations including Jamaica, Hawaii, and Germany. Professionally, he served as Assistant Director of Probation Services for the Administrative Office of the Illinois Courts, retiring after 32 years of dedicated service.

Visitation: 4:00 - 7:00 pm, Monday, October 5, 2026, and a second visitation from 10:00 - 11:30 am, Tuesday, October 6, 2026, both at Staab Funeral Home - Springfield.

Funeral Service: 11:30 am, Tuesday, October 6, 2026, at Staab Funeral Home - Springfield, with Mark Gifford officiating. A burial will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society or Alzheimer's Association.
