Rita A. Greenwald, 94, of Springfield, passed away on Tuesday, May 23, 2023 at her home. She was born August 18, 1928 in Manitowoc, WI to Raymond and Anna Engeldinger Harlow. She married Fred Greenwald on November 17, 1951 and he survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Mary (Tom) Cartwright of Columbus, OH and Margaret “Maggie” (Mark) DeTardo of Fleming Island, FL; four sons, Mark (Terri) Greenwald of Springfield, John (Natalie) Greenwald of Springfield, Peter (Anne) Greenwald of Midlothian, VA and Dr. James Greenwald of Springfield; 13 grandchildren, Elizabeth Cartwright, Catherine Cartwright, Christopher (Cara) Greenwald, Lynde Greenwald, Matt Hatcher, Jon Embrey, Teresa Greenwald, Janie Mei Greenwald, Steven DeTardo, Laura DeTardo, Katie DeTardo, Katrina (Chris) Hadnot, Nate Greenwald, Jacqueline Greenwald, and Molly Greenwald; 12 great-grandchildren, Abby, Maddie, Aubrey, Sydney, Olivia, Aubrey, Harrison, Stella, Yakabo, Eli, Hannah, Bella; one son-in-law, Jeff Reno of New Berlin and one sister, Inez McDermott of Manitowoc, WI; brother-in-law, Don Markwardt of Manitowoc, WI; and sister-in-law, Cathy Greenwald of Manitowoc, WI; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; five sisters, Mary Tuesberg, Grace Markwardt, Benita Ewald, Jean Kasberger, and Eileen Neuser; one brother, Patrick Harlow; an infant son, Patrick and one daughter, Jean Reno.

Rita attended Lincoln High School in Manitowoc, WI. She was a graduate of Silverlake College, formerly Holy Family School of Nursing. She was a Registered Nurse in Manitowoc, WI and worked for twenty-one years in the Springfield Diocesan Mission Office.

Rita was a longtime and devoted member of Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. She was a member of many Catholic organizations including, the Cathedral Council of Catholic Women, Diocesan Council of Catholic Women (former President), the National Council of Catholic Women (former President), and Springfield Right to Life. In 2002, she received a papal award for outstanding service to the church.

Visitation: 4 – 7 PM, Thursday, June 1, 2023 at Staab Funeral Home – Springfield.

Funeral Mass: 10 AM, Friday, June 2, 2023 at Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, with Rev. Brian Alford officiating. A lie-in-state will take place from 9 – 10 AM. Private burial will take place at Camp Butler National Cemetery.
