Robert Russell Golden passed away at the age of 92 on December 26, 2024, at the Aberdeen Heights care center in St. Louis, MO, following a brief illness. Bob was a proud resident of Springfield, IL for most of his life.
Bob was married to Lois (Smith) Golden of Springfield for nearly 45 years before her passing in 2004. They met and were married at Springfield Southern Baptist Church in1959, where they were life-long members. The team of Bob and Lois made their mark through fully engaged, unconditional, and loving support of family. Their commitment encompassed extended family, friends, and neighbors who knew they could count on Bob and Lois.
Bob graduated from Jacksonville (IL) High School in 1952. Shortly after graduation, he entered service in the U.S. Army to begin a military career that covered forty years between the army and the Illinois National Guard. Bob retired from the military in 1992 as a Sergeant Major. Before becoming employed full-time by the IL National Guard, he worked at Montgomery Ward and The State Journal-Register in Springfield. Not one to shy away from work, Bob continued in the employment of the State of Illinois from 1993 to 2018, working for the Department of Transportation.
Bob is survived by his three children, Bob (Jeanne) Golden of Greenwich, CT, Bill (Sue) Golden of Chicago, IL, and Sharon (Joe) Dobbs of St. Louis, MO. He truly lit up from time spent with his seven grandchildren Allyson (Ryan) Fassler, Alissa (Ryan) Crawford, Jennifer (Spencer) Ward, Melanie (Ethan) Chaplinsky, Jacob Dobbs, Daniel Dobbs and John Golden, and his three great-grandchildren James Fassler, Thomas Fassler and Abigail Ward.
Bob’s dedication to family, disciplined work ethic, and perseverance from very humble beginnings were a blessing and inspiration to all.
A visitation will be held Monday, January 6, 2025, from 10 – 11:30 am at Staab Funeral Home, 1109 S 5th St., Springfield, IL 62703. A funeral service will follow at 11:30 am with Pastor Doug Morrow officiating.
A private burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery with military honors.
