Steven “Steve” B. Heistand, 78, of Curran, IL, passed away on October 3, 2026, at his home surrounded by the love of his family.

Steve was born on September 17, 1948, in Moline, IL, and he lived a life marked by hard work, devotion to family, and a quiet, steady kindness that touched those who knew him. He was the son of Harry and Jean Heistand, both deceased. He was preceded in death by family members who held an important place in his life, and he carried their memory with him throughout the years.

Steve proudly served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War from 1966 to 1969, a chapter of his life that reflected his courage, commitment, and sense of duty. Following his military service, he built a long career as a truck driver, a profession that suited his dependable nature and strong work ethic. He took pride in doing his job well and in the honest, steady life he created through years of dedication on the road.

Outside of work, Steve found great joy in woodworking. He was creative and handy, and he loved making all sorts of things with his hands. Among the many projects he enjoyed, toy cars and birdhouses were especially notable examples of his craftsmanship and imagination.

Steve was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend. He is survived by his wife, Debbie K. Cloyd Heistand, whom he married on August 15, 1981. He also leaves behind his daughter, Amy (Tate) Davis-Groover; his grandchildren, Devon and Tiana; and his great-grandchildren, Aria and Lachlan. He is also survived by his brother, Harry James Heistand; his sisters, Jackie (Randy) Goodman and Marlene Heistand; and his beloved pup, Bailey, who was a cherished companion.

Steve will be remembered for his creative spirit, his practical skills, and the loving way he cared for the people and animals in his life. He had a gentle presence and a way of making others feel valued. His family and friends will remember him not only for what he built with his hands, but also for the life he built through loyalty, love, and perseverance.

Cremation will be arranged by Staab Funeral Home – Springfield.

Memorial Contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or to the Animal Protective League.
